Second Maasvlakte

Boskalis and Van Oord consortium builds Second Maasvlakte

PUMA, the Project Organization for the Extension of the Maasvlakte, is a joint venture of the hydraulic engineering contractors Boskalis and Van Oord. The consortium has been instructed by the Rotterdam Port Authority to build the first section of the Second Maasvlakte – the extension of the Rotterdam harbor – between 2008 and 2013.

The first phase of the Second Maasvlakte will comprise a harbor area measuring 700 hectares. The port basins will be deepened to –20m NAP (Normal Amsterdam Water Level) so that even the largest container vessels can dock. Another component of the project is the construction of the overall sea defenses. They will be about 11 kilometers long, and will include a hard and a soft section.

Multi-purpose and high-tech equipment will do the work. An extensive fleet of TSHDs, cutter-suction dredgers, rockfall vessels, cranes and auxiliary equipment will be used. Between four and six TSHDs will bring 210 million m³ of sand from the offshore borrow area to the coast. Two cutter-suction dredgers will be used to deepen the port basins to 20 m and to pump 30 million m³ of sand from the existing port to the new harbor areas.
