The West Sands Coast Protection Scheme situated in Selsey, Hampshire, UK, was developed and constructed by a team comprising of Bunn Leisure, Atkins Limited and the Joint Venture (JV) of Boskalis Westminster and Dean & Dyball Civil Engineering.
The scheme, completed on time and to budget, consists of two offshore breakwaters made up of 93,000t of granite and 360,000m3 of shingle, constructed between April 2012 and February 2013.
This project presented many varied challenges. To take advantage of the best weather and sea conditions, the project was undertaken over the summer months. This required extensive planning and liaison to ensure that the holiday park operated as normal, resulting in the beach works actually becoming an attraction. The shallow approaches to the beach meant that timing of marine deliveries of rock and shingle were critical within the tidal cycle.
