Safety is one of Boskalis’ core values and is given top priority in our working environment where activities have a relatively high-risk profile. The goal of our safety program, NINA, is ‘No Injuries, No Accidents’. Since its launch in 2010, Lost Time Injury Frequency (LTIF) has fallen significantly, in spite of the company’s strong growth. The number of incidents per 200,000 hours worked resulting in absence from work has dropped considerably by more than 85% in the last six years.
Boskalis aims for a balanced composition of its staff. We need entrepreneurial ‘thinkers and doers,’ as well as a steady supply of talented and qualified employees at all times. Attracting, developing and retaining talent is therefore a top priority for our company. Our open business culture enables employees to develop their talents, and provides scope for innovation and entrepreneurship in many areas. Staff are given plenty of opportunities for personal development during their career.
We endorse the guidelines of the International Labour Organization (ILO) and offer fair employment and decent working conditions. Most of our employees are employed on a permanent basis. The majority of this core has been with us for many years, and staff turnover is low. On projects, our core staff are supplemented by employees drawn from a flexible talent pool.
Boskalis has explored how to keep employees healthy and motivated through to their retirement, together with the Works Council and trade unions. We provide training like the Fit for Boskalis module that aims to provide information on a healthy lifestyle, and a course on effectiveness and mindfulness at work. Furthermore, we give our employees ample opportunities to shape their own career and we try to accommodate them as far as possible in life’s various phases.
Diversity in the workplace
Boskalis employs staff from 63 different nationalities with a balanced age profile. Almost 74% of our employees are under 50, with over half being in the 30-50 age category. We employ a relatively large number of men and relatively few part-time staff. The ratios of men to women and of full-time to part-time staff at Boskalis are consistent with the nature of our work. Boskalis operates a strict equal opportunities policy for all employees, regardless of race, nationality, ethnic background, age, religion, gender, sexual orientation or disability.
