Climate change

Climate change and its consequences are increasingly urgent topics for society and our sector to address. Taking action is no longer optional and we’ve set a direction for our business, in alignment with the Paris Climate agreement. Boskalis has the ambition to be climate neutral by 2050 across our global operations.

Chaired by a member of our Board of Management, our Climate Change Taskforce oversees our mitigation program, which focuses on five areas:

  • Increasing our carbon efficiency. We pursue emissions-reducing technology, work methods and behaviours to optimise our operational fuel efficiency;
  • Seeking sustainable energy sources. We collaborate, research and pilot potential new energy sources with ultimate the aim to take these to scale;
  • Developing sustainable solutions for clients. We work to help our clients to select lower carbon options for their projects and achieve their own climate ambitions;
  • Exploring carbon offset and credits. We actively investigate sustainable options for offsetting emissions and preparing for potential future carbon markets;
  • Staying on top of trends. We take part in the low carbon conversation to help us stay ahead of future trends and keep a close eye on emerging regulations.
  • Collaboration. We see collaboration with our clients and the sector as a whole as essential to finding the solutions to reduce emissions of the works we do.

We see collaboration with our clients and the sector as a whole as essential to finding the solutions to reduce emissions of the works we do.

Over the coming years we will need to focus on research and development for the low carbon fuels and technologies that will power our fleet of vessels and our land based equipment in the future. Our vessels have an average lifespan of 25 to 30 years, and whilst there is no silver bullet to reduce the emissions, we are exploring a range of solutions such as hydrogen, methanol, ethanol and ammonia as alternative fuels. We will also continue our Boskalis on Bio Program.

Our footprint
At Boskalis, we contribute to greenhouse gas emissions mainly through our fleet operations, which account for the vast majority of our Scope 1 and 2 CO2 emissions. In 2021 this was 1.08 million MT.
