Managing Social Impact
Although much of our work takes place offshore, we are sometimes operating in close proximity to local communities. In many cases the potential social impact is limited, but in some cases the impact can be potentially significant – either positively or negatively. In most cases, our approach towards communities is guided by an Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) and, in all cases, is in line with our Boskalis Code of Conduct, which aligns with the principles of the International Labour Organization and the OECD Guidelines for Multinational Enterprises.
To help us apply our Boskalis Code of Conduct in projects we developed our Social Impact Program. The program increases internal awareness of social issues and provides a structured approach to manage project level social impact: for example, through social risk evaluation early in the project lifecycle. Our Social Impact Program is structured around four core areas and tailored to project needs: risk and opportunity assessment; stakeholder engagement; grievance management; and worker welfare.
Whilst we work to properly manage adverse social impacts associated with our activities, we can also stimulate positive impacts through local job creation, skills development and training, and procurement. Where applicable, we pay special attention to vulnerable groups in society or those that may be adversely impacted by the project.
Creating local jobs
We integrate local content requirements into the execution of a project. We have built up significant experience in developing the necessary local skills and competencies to enable employment of a substantial percentage of local community members, and small and medium enterprises.
We purchase goods and services from local suppliers whenever possible. Such goods may include fuel, food, facility consumables, construction parts for our equipment, safety products and equipment such as cars, trucks, bulldozers, cranes and small floating equipment.
