Teekay awarded Fairmount Marine, a 100% subsidiary of Boskalis, a contract for the tow-out and towage of the FPSO from Geoje, South Korea to the port of Haugesund in Norway.

FPSO Petrojarl Knarr

The Petrojarl Knarr is one of the world’s largest floating production and storage units (FPSO) for harsh environments. The FPSO is owned by Teekay, a market leader in FPSO solutions for companies that produce oil and gas in deep waters and harsh weather conditions, and it is the company’s largest project to date. Petrojarl Knarr, which was newly built by Samsung Heavy Industries in Geoje, South Korea, is 256.4 m long and 48 m wide with a deadweight of 135,000 tons. It has a production capacity of 63,000 barrels a day and a storage capacity of 800,000 barrels. The FPSO will operate on the Knarr oil and gas field in the Norwegian North Sea for BG Norge.

Project challenges

The main challenges, which were dealt with effectively during project preparation and execution, were: 

  • Weather: The typhoon season in the Northwestern Pacific starts at this time of year. In addition, the Cape of Good Hope was rounded during the local winter. Several weather agencies monitored the weather under way closely and forecasts were used as a basis for decisions by the experienced crew on board. 
  • Towage by three tugs: Well-documented and well-trained procedures were in place specifically for three-tug towage to prevent any unsafe situations during the tow.
  • Logistics: The various scheduled port calls were carefully planned and executed with assistance from local port agents to prevent unnecessary loss of time. 

Conclusion

The FPSO Petrojarl Knarr was towed effectively and safely, despite the distance and weather limitations along the route. With an average speed of 10.74 knots the three Fairmount tugs towed the FPSO more than 16,000 miles from South Korea to Norway in just 61 towing days, which is extremely fast, especially for an FPSO this size. Evaluating the project preparation and execution, it can be concluded that the operational best practices with the experienced crew on board were decisive for the safe, controlled and successful execution of this towage.

Gas pipeline project, Trans Thailand Malaysia

The Trans Thailand Malaysia Gas Pipeline Project comprised the installation of a 34 inch concrete coated gas pipeline, running from the joint Thai-Malaysia development area approximately 270 kilometers offshore towards the southern Thai coast near Chana. As part of this project a contract was awarded to the Boskalis Offshore B.V. - Tideway B.V. consortium for the provision of the dredging and backfilling works, whereas Boskalis Offshore provided the main equipment and project support.

Glory hole excavation, White Rose

The White Rose offshore oil field is the third major oil field in the Jeanne d’Arc Basin on the Grand Banks, some 350 kilometers east of St. John’s, Newfoundland, Canada and within 50 kilometers from the Terra Nova and Hibernia fields. The South White Rose oil pool covers approximately 40 square kilometers and contains an estimated 200-250 million barrels of recoverable oil.

Hibiscus to Point Fortin

The NCMA Development Project comprised the development of the North Coast Marine Area, which is located in the Caribbean Sea and Bay of Paria, Trinidad. The project included the installation of a 24" Gas Export Pipeline from the Hibiscus Platform to a landfall at Point Fortin. From the landfall the pipeline was routed by directional drilling and by surface laid pipeline, to a termination point in the Atlantic LNG Terminal at Point Fortin. As part of this project Boskalis was awarded the contract for the provision of landfall, directional drilling and onshore pipeline installation and testing of the 24" gas pipeline system.

Hanze F2a Development Project

Hanze, 200 kilometers offshore Den Helder in block F/2 of the North Sea, is the first operated development in the Dutch sector by Germany's Veba Oil. The oilfield reserved approximate 34 million bbl, plus 40 bcf of associated gas. 

Installation gas pipeline, Takoradi

Late November 1998 Boskalis was awarded a subcontract for the installation of two marine pipelines to supply and discharge cooling seawater for the Takoradi thermal power plant that was under construction for the Volta River Authority, near the village of Aboadze approximately 20 kilometers north-east of Takoradi, Republic of Ghana.

Re-insulation Gannet 'C' Bundles, North Sea

The Gannet 'C' satellite field, which is located in the North Sea at 112 miles East of Aberdeen in 95-meter water depth, comprises four drill centres, each having one or more producing wells. The drill centres are connected to the local platform Gannet 'A' by four flowline bundles with a total length of 10 kilometers. A glycol-based gel, filling the annulus of the Gannet 'C' carrier pipe, insulated the individual flow lines. Prompted by degradation of the gel and the resulting drop in oil and gas arrival temperatures at the platform, an EPIC project took off for a re-insulation system. The objective of the re-insulation system was that it should provide sufficient insulation to the bundles in order to safeguard production during the total field life of Gannet 'C', being a minimum lifetime of 15 years. Boskalis Offshore was supported by Hydronamic - the in-house engineering department.
