Wreck removal, Baltic Ace

On 5 December 2012, the car carrier Baltic Ace sank with more than 1,400 cars on board after a collision with a container ship near the entrance of the main shipping lane leading to Rotterdam port.

Boskalis and a partner successfully completed the salvage of the car carrier Baltic Ace in the North Sea. The project started in April 2014 by removing 460,000 liters of fuel oil from the wreck. The second phase of the project consisted of the removal and controlled dismantling of the entire wreck and its cargo.

Sep Orion

In 2012 SMIT Salvage successfully removed the diesel oil from the grounded jack-up work platform SEP Orion at Sao Luis, Brazil. SMIT Salvage was also awarded the wreck removal contract.

Fuel removal, Costa Concordia

On Friday the 13th of January 2012 the cruise vessel Costa Concordia, carrying over 4,000 passengers and crew, hit a rock and subsequently encountered stability problems, whilst passing the Isle of Giglio in Tuscany. Eventually the Costa Concordia grounded and listed to approximately 56° on her starboard side. Fortunately, the majority of the passengers and crew were safely evacuated yet as it turned out later, 32 people regrettably lost their lives.

Salvage operation, Full City

On July 30, 2009 bulk carrier Full City, (in ballast and at anchor off the port of Langesund, Norway, awaiting her berth) was trapped in a sudden storm, causing her anchor to drag. She went aground off the port of Langesund. This vessel was refloated by a SMIT Salvage team in mid-August, following the successful completion of a challenging operation.

Haven

Mid-April SMIT Salvage started a project to remove oil residues from the wreck of the VLCC ‘Haven', off the coast of Genoa, Italy. This crude carrier sank in the 1980s as a result of an on-board explosion.

In the night of Friday to Saturday 2 February 2008, due to heavy wind, heavy cargo vessel Zhen Hua 10, carrying five gantry cranes, grounded alongside the beach, just outside Rotterdam on the Maasvlakte.
