Rehabilitation of old breakwater, Port of Poti

The city of Poti is located at the mouth of Georgia’s largest river, the Rioni. It has been an important trade centre for centuries. Since the early 19th century, many plans have been developed for the creation of a major sea port. Construction work started in the 1850s on the main breakwater that is still protecting the port today. During its long lifetime, this structure has been maintained by frequently adding 20-60 tons of concrete cubes to the armour layer. Significant settlement of the structure over time has lowered the crest level considerably, resulting in large overtopping volumes and therefore in port-operation downtime. As a result, a rehabilitation project was executed between 2006 and 2008 by Royal Boskalis Westminster N.V. to reduce the downtime caused by overtopping waves.

The project financing was organized by Royal Boskalis Westminster N.V. and, as a result, the project was partly financed by the Dutch export stimulating subsidy for developing countries (ORET) and partly by a soft loan from the ING bank. In total, 50,000 tons of filter material, 10,000 tons of rock and 6,000 Xbloc units were placed. The cross-section consists of an impermeable wall structure with a homogeneous body of large cubes in front. Hydronamic, the Boskalis in-house engineering consultant, designed -in consultation with DMC, the license holder of Xbloc- an alternative solution. In this new design, the existing cubes on the breakwater slope are covered first with a number of layers of rock before final covering with a single layer of 2 m3 Xbloc armour units.

Port development,
Libreville - Gabon

A new area was constructed in the Port of Libreville for a mineral terminal, dry dock, fishing port, processing facilities and other port activities, such as aggregate processing. This new port development was required to improve and strengthen the logistic capacity for the inland mining industry, to reduce export costs, and thus to increase the competitiveness of mineral exports from Gabon.

Butendiek OWF

Boskalis was contracted by OWP Butendiek GmbH & Co. KG to supply, install and protect (by post-lay burial) the high-voltage inter-array cable at the offshore wind farm of Butendiek. This German wind farm is situated in the German Bight (Nordsea), approx. 35 km west of the island of Sylt. The 33 km2 wind farm consists of 80 wind turbines with a capacity of 3.6 MW each and a total capacity of 288 MW. The inauguration of the wind farm took place on September 8, 2015. It provides renew-able energy to approx. 370,000 households.

Cleanup sediment treatment, Fox river

As a result of industrialization the riverbed of the Fox River (Wisconsin, USA) had become contaminated with PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyls). Joining together a number of large paper mills based on the banks of the river have established the Fox River Cleanup Group to handle the remediation project. The site is on the federal Superfund program’s National Priorities List.

Cieg GJ1 Cable repair

Channel Islands Electricity Grid, a joint venture between Jersey Electricity and Guernsey Electricity operate several interconnecting power cable systems (power and telecom) between Jersey, Guernsey and France. Both Jersey and Guernsey rely upon the services of these interconnecting power cables and as a consequence there is a demand to reduce the possible effects and impact of failure to these interconnecting power cables. Boskalis were contracted to conduct a preemptive repair replacing a section of cable including the installation two subsea joints on the Guernsey Jersey circuit, close to Havelet bay.
