Coastal defense and
riverbank protection

Boskalis is a leading global player in the field of coastal defense and riverbank protection. We design, construct and maintain hard sea barriers, such as dikes, dams and flood barriers, and also soft sea defenses, such as beach and near-shore replenishment. In addition, we provide innovative solutions for forms of coastal protection based on the principles of building with nature such as the sand motors and the use of mangroves.

Ensuring safety and natural balance

Safety and a natural balance are the most important aspects of good coastal protection. Our vast experience and expertise enable us to assist you with the economic and environmental assessment of your coastal protection project. We have a proven track record and the drive to maintain a well-balanced ecosystem.

Our innovative and building with nature solutions

  • Sand motors use natural forces like tides, wind, currents and waves to spread sand along the coast from a central replenishment location.
  • The creation of a wave-reducing system. Examples are the combined approach of land reclamation and new mangrove forests to protect the North Java coastal area in Indonesia and a green wave reducing dike in The Netherlands. A willow forest, planted along the front of the dike, is expected to be able to absorb up to 80% of the waves’ force.

Boosting Dutch flood defenses

Boskalis is involved in many projects forming part of the Netherlands’ ‘Room for the River’ program, designed to provide more space for the rivers Rhine, Meuse, Waal and IJssel. Success demands innovative solutions, co-creation and stakeholder management.

Calling a halt to coastal erosion

Boskalis has embarked on a Building with Nature project to halt coastal erosion in Central Java, through a unique integration of mangrove restoration, small-scale engineering and sustainable land use.

Ameland

Large-scale beach nourishment Ameland

On the Dutch Wadden Island of Ameland, we completed an extensive beach replenishment. With 3 million cubic meters of sand, it is even the largest beach replenishment in Dutch history

Griend nature preservation project

Boskalis teamed up with the Dutch Society for the Preservation of Nature to protect the uninhabited island of Griend in the Dutch Wadden Sea. The island provides a vital habitat for many migratory and breeding birds. However, due to erosion this bird paradise was at risk of being washed away.

Dredging techniques

Cutter section dredger

Dredging with a cutter suction dredger takes place while the vessel is moored with spuds or anchors and consists of powerful cutting action combined with suction.

Backhoe_dredger_animation.JPG

Backhoe dredger

A backhoe dredger (BHD) is a hydraulic excavator installed on a pontoon. Dredging is executed by the excavator which is mounted on a turntable at the front of the pontoon. The backhoe dredger is mainly used for dredging in shallow or confined waters.

Trailing suction hopper dredger

Trailing suction hopper dredgers can fill their own holds (hoppers) by sucking material from the seabed using a trailing suction head fitted to pipes that trail over the bed as the ship sails.

Coastal development, Hondsbossche and
Pettemer Sea Defense

A joint venture of Boskalis Nederland and Van Oord has been commissioned by the Hollands Noorderkwartier water control board to reinforce the Hondsbossche and Pettemer Sea Defense between the villages of Petten and Camperduin on the coast of the Dutch province of Noord-Holland.

Maintenance dredging, Yangon River

Located close to the city centre on the Yangon River, Yangon Port has been the main port to Myanmar since colonial times. Currently, the port has capacity for vessels of up to 15,000 –20,000 DWT and works are scheduled to increase the port’s capacity for vessels up to 35,000 DWT.

Port development,
Libreville - Gabon

A new area was constructed in the Port of Libreville for a mineral terminal, dry dock, fishing port, processing facilities and other port activities, such as aggregate processing. This new port development was required to improve and strengthen the logistic capacity for the inland mining industry, to reduce export costs, and thus to increase the competitiveness of mineral exports from Gabon.

Butendiek OWF

Boskalis was contracted by OWP Butendiek GmbH & Co. KG to supply, install and protect (by post-lay burial) the high-voltage inter-array cable at the offshore wind farm of Butendiek. This German wind farm is situated in the German Bight (Nordsea), approx. 35 km west of the island of Sylt. The 33 km2 wind farm consists of 80 wind turbines with a capacity of 3.6 MW each and a total capacity of 288 MW. The inauguration of the wind farm took place on September 8, 2015. It provides renew-able energy to approx. 370,000 households.

Cleanup sediment treatment, Fox river

As a result of industrialization the riverbed of the Fox River (Wisconsin, USA) had become contaminated with PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyls). Joining together a number of large paper mills based on the banks of the river have established the Fox River Cleanup Group to handle the remediation project. The site is on the federal Superfund program’s National Priorities List.

Cieg GJ1 Cable repair

Channel Islands Electricity Grid, a joint venture between Jersey Electricity and Guernsey Electricity operate several interconnecting power cable systems (power and telecom) between Jersey, Guernsey and France. Both Jersey and Guernsey rely upon the services of these interconnecting power cables and as a consequence there is a demand to reduce the possible effects and impact of failure to these interconnecting power cables. Boskalis were contracted to conduct a preemptive repair replacing a section of cable including the installation two subsea joints on the Guernsey Jersey circuit, close to Havelet bay.
