Activities

We have expanded our activities from our traditional dredging-related operations, which include the construction and maintenance of ports and waterways, land reclamation, coastal defense and riverbank protection. Today, Boskalis also offers a wide variety of marine services and contracting to the offshore energy sector. In addition, we provide towage services, emergency response and salvage through SMIT and our strategic joint venture Smit Lamnalco.

Our dredging activities include port construction and maintenance, land reclamation, coastal defense and riverbank protection. We also operate as a contractor of dry infrastructure projects.

We are involved in the development, construction, maintenance and decommissioning of oil and LNG import/export facilities, offshore platforms, cables and pipelines, and offshore wind farms.

We provide assistance to vessels in distress, wreck removal and salvage related services, including environmental care.

Project overview

Provision and installation of submarine fiber optic cable, Strait of Magellan

In September 2011 Boskalis was awarded a contract worth approximately EUR 30 million to provide and install a submarine fiber optic cable across the Strait of Magellan, Argentina. The contract was awarded by the state-owned corporation AR-SAT (Empresa Argentina de Soluciones Satelitales S.A.).

Fuel removal, Costa Concordia

On Friday the 13th of January 2012 the cruise vessel Costa Concordia, carrying over 4,000 passengers and crew, hit a rock and subsequently encountered stability problems, whilst passing the Isle of Giglio in Tuscany. Eventually the Costa Concordia grounded and listed to approximately 56° on her starboard side. Fortunately, the majority of the passengers and crew were safely evacuated yet as it turned out later, 32 people regrettably lost their lives.

Offshore wind farm, LINCS

SMIT Transport is transporting the wind turbine foundations for the new Lincs Offshore Windfarm, situated off Great Yarmouth, UK. When completed, the windfarm will consist of 75 turbines capable of generating sufficient power to meet the annual demand of some 200,000 households.

Reinforcing Dutch
coastline, Sandmotor

In December 2010 Royal Boskalis Westminster N.V. was awarded a contract by the Dutch Directorate General for Public Works and Water Management to reinforce part of the coastline in the province of Zuid-Holland by creating a ‘sand engine’. The total value of the contract is EUR 50 million for the Van Oord- Boskalis consortium, in which Boskalis has a 50% stake.

Port expansion LNG terminal, Cuyutlán

The Mexican Ministry of Communications and Transport awarded Royal Boskalis Westminster N.V. two contracts for dredging an access channel and turning basin at the Cuyutlán liquefied natural gas import terminal on the west coast of Mexico.

Design and construction harbor channel, Sydney harbor

The 'Sydney Harbor Channel Dredging Project' in Nova Scotia, Canada, involved dredging and reclamation work as part of the construction of the new Sydney Port container terminal located on the northeast coast of Canada. Once operational, Sydney Port will be the most northerly deepwater container terminal on the North American east coast.
