Onshore co-mining project, Lelydorp

Suralco L.L.C., an indirect joint subsidiary of Alcoa Inc. and Alumina Ltd., has awarded Boskalis a contract for the mining of bauxite in Lelydorp, Suriname. Boskalis is responsible for the entire mining process, from engineering and overburden removal to bauxite mining and ore delivery.

Mobilization

One of the most challenging operations of the project involved moving the Boskalis cutter suction dredger Orion from Abu Dhabi to the heart of the Surinam jungle. Overcoming bad weather and numerous engineering challenges, Boskalis managed to complete this job safely.

Wet overburden stripping

The Orion removed the wet overburden – consisting of both soft and stiff clays – prior to the mining operations.

Dry overburden stripping and mining

When the dredging has finished, the remaining overburden will be removed by our dry earth movement fleet, which consists of hydraulic excavators, articulated dump trucks and auxiliary equipment. Our earthmoving expertise means we will execute the entire production process from pit to plant. This includes activities such as fine stripping, ore sampling, drilling & blasting, ore haulage and ROM pad management.

Engineering and surveying

The wet overburden removal is charted using hydrographic single beam measurements; the dry excavation of overburden and mining progress is meticulously monitored by state of the art techniques such as UAV-photogrammetric and laser-scanning surveys.

Port development,
Libreville - Gabon

A new area was constructed in the Port of Libreville for a mineral terminal, dry dock, fishing port, processing facilities and other port activities, such as aggregate processing. This new port development was required to improve and strengthen the logistic capacity for the inland mining industry, to reduce export costs, and thus to increase the competitiveness of mineral exports from Gabon.

Butendiek OWF

Boskalis was contracted by OWP Butendiek GmbH & Co. KG to supply, install and protect (by post-lay burial) the high-voltage inter-array cable at the offshore wind farm of Butendiek. This German wind farm is situated in the German Bight (Nordsea), approx. 35 km west of the island of Sylt. The 33 km2 wind farm consists of 80 wind turbines with a capacity of 3.6 MW each and a total capacity of 288 MW. The inauguration of the wind farm took place on September 8, 2015. It provides renew-able energy to approx. 370,000 households.

Cleanup sediment treatment, Fox river

As a result of industrialization the riverbed of the Fox River (Wisconsin, USA) had become contaminated with PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyls). Joining together a number of large paper mills based on the banks of the river have established the Fox River Cleanup Group to handle the remediation project. The site is on the federal Superfund program’s National Priorities List.

Cieg GJ1 Cable repair

Channel Islands Electricity Grid, a joint venture between Jersey Electricity and Guernsey Electricity operate several interconnecting power cable systems (power and telecom) between Jersey, Guernsey and France. Both Jersey and Guernsey rely upon the services of these interconnecting power cables and as a consequence there is a demand to reduce the possible effects and impact of failure to these interconnecting power cables. Boskalis were contracted to conduct a preemptive repair replacing a section of cable including the installation two subsea joints on the Guernsey Jersey circuit, close to Havelet bay.
