Construction
and maintenance
of ports

Boskalis has extensive experience constructing and maintaining ports and waterways worldwide. Our activities include dredging port access channels, inner channels, turning basins and mooring berths and constructing breakwaters utilizing our versatile fleet of trailing suction hopper dredgers, cutter suction dredgers and backhoes. Where additional land is needed for port development, we reclaim harbor islands and land for yards and terminals. In addition, we construct quay walls and offer soil improvement by compacting and vertical/horizontal drainage.

Bringing your project to a safe haven

Constructing ports involves a lot more than just hydraulic engineering. We also conduct detailed technical and financial feasibility studies for each project, and can assess and monitor your project’s environmental impact and by applying our building with nature techniques even assist in overcoming environmental concerns. We can take care of ongoing maintenance, which can also be taken into account during the construction process. In this way we bring even the most complex project to a safe haven.

Creating Gorgon

In 2009, Boskalis was awarded a contract on the Chevron-operated Gorgon Project, one of the largest and most complex contracts to be undertaken in our history. Our scope of work included the design and construction of some of the port facilities at Barrow Island.

Duqm

Duqm port construction

This extraordinary EPC project we dredged a new harbor basin and entrance channel with a depth of 18 meters, constructed a kilometer-long quay wall, two 400 meter-long jetties and reclaimed land for a port platform including ground improvement and associated 4 km shore protection.

Co-creation in Brazil

From 2011-15, Boskalis was involved in the construction of one of Latin America’s largest port-industry complexes in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Boskalis dredged two huge access channels, a turning basin, an inner channel, mooring berths and constructed revetments for the breakwater and over 13 km of access roads.

Maintenance dredging, Yangon River

Located close to the city centre on the Yangon River, Yangon Port has been the main port to Myanmar since colonial times. Currently, the port has capacity for vessels of up to 15,000 –20,000 DWT and works are scheduled to increase the port’s capacity for vessels up to 35,000 DWT.

Port development,
Libreville - Gabon

A new area was constructed in the Port of Libreville for a mineral terminal, dry dock, fishing port, processing facilities and other port activities, such as aggregate processing. This new port development was required to improve and strengthen the logistic capacity for the inland mining industry, to reduce export costs, and thus to increase the competitiveness of mineral exports from Gabon.

Butendiek OWF

Boskalis was contracted by OWP Butendiek GmbH & Co. KG to supply, install and protect (by post-lay burial) the high-voltage inter-array cable at the offshore wind farm of Butendiek. This German wind farm is situated in the German Bight (Nordsea), approx. 35 km west of the island of Sylt. The 33 km2 wind farm consists of 80 wind turbines with a capacity of 3.6 MW each and a total capacity of 288 MW. The inauguration of the wind farm took place on September 8, 2015. It provides renew-able energy to approx. 370,000 households.

Cleanup sediment treatment, Fox river

As a result of industrialization the riverbed of the Fox River (Wisconsin, USA) had become contaminated with PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyls). Joining together a number of large paper mills based on the banks of the river have established the Fox River Cleanup Group to handle the remediation project. The site is on the federal Superfund program’s National Priorities List.

Cieg GJ1 Cable repair

Channel Islands Electricity Grid, a joint venture between Jersey Electricity and Guernsey Electricity operate several interconnecting power cable systems (power and telecom) between Jersey, Guernsey and France. Both Jersey and Guernsey rely upon the services of these interconnecting power cables and as a consequence there is a demand to reduce the possible effects and impact of failure to these interconnecting power cables. Boskalis were contracted to conduct a preemptive repair replacing a section of cable including the installation two subsea joints on the Guernsey Jersey circuit, close to Havelet bay.
